ZSM-5 BET Surface Area
ZSM-5 zeolite typically exhibits a BET surface area of ≥350 m²/g, with most commercial grades in the 350–420 m²/g range. The BET value reflects the total surface area accessible to nitrogen molecules and includes both micropore and external surface contributions.
What affects ZSM-5 BET values:
- Crystallinity: Higher crystallinity directly correlates with higher micropore surface area and BET. Amorphous content reduces BET proportionally.
- Particle size: Nanocrystalline ZSM-5 (<100 nm) may show BET values 5–10% higher than micron-scale crystals due to increased external surface area.
- Si/Al ratio: Higher Si/Al ratios generally produce slightly lower BET values because of reduced framework polarity, though the effect is small (±5%).
- Template removal: Incomplete calcination leaves residual organic template in micropores — this reduces measured BET and must be corrected.
Our ZSM-5 grades achieve BET ≥350 m²/g across all Si/Al ratios. For high-crystallinity grades (SMF-150s, SMF-200s), BET typically exceeds 380 m²/g. BET data is included in every Technical Data Sheet.
Measurement note: Samples should be degassed at 300 °C for ≥4 hours under vacuum before measurement. Residual moisture or adsorbed organics will produce artificially low BET values.
