Acetic Acid Purification Zeolite Adsorbent
ZC-DIO-1 is a zeolite adsorbent supplied for acetic acid purification and trace iodine removal. For procurement evaluation, ZeoCatalyst can provide TDS, COA, sample support, and quotation details before pilot or bulk supply.
Acetic acid produced via the methanol carbonylation (Monsanto / BP Cativa) process contains trace iodine compounds originating from the iodide-based catalyst promoter system. These iodine contaminants — including organic iodides (iodomethane, iodoethane), inorganic iodide ions, and molecular iodine — must be reduced to parts-per-billion levels to meet product specifications for high-purity acetic acid used in vinyl acetate, acetate esters, and purified terephthalic acid (PTA) production.
The Purification Challenge
| Contaminant | Typical Concentration | Target |
|---|---|---|
| Total iodine (organic + inorganic) | 50-100 ppb | ≤ 5 ppb |
| Key species removed | Iodomethane, iodoethane, I-, I2, complexed iodine | All species |
Iodine removal requires an adsorbent that can capture both inorganic and organic iodine species through multiple mechanisms — chemisorption, catalytic decomposition, complexation, and physisorption.
ZeoCatalyst Solution: ZC-DIO-1
ZC-DIO-1 is a silver-loaded zeolite adsorbent engineered for deep iodine removal from acetic acid streams:
- Reduces iodine from ~ 100 ppb to ≤ 5 ppb in a single pass
- Effective against organic iodine, inorganic iodide, and elemental iodine
- High mechanical strength and acid resistance for aggressive chemical service
- Regenerable — single-pass life ≥ 7 months, total service life ≥ 2 years
- Silver loading ≥ 7 wt% for maximum capture capacity
The binder-free zeolite support with hierarchical pore structure enables fast diffusion of iodine-containing molecules to active silver sites, while the high silver loading ensures deep removal even under varying feed conditions.
Process Integration
ZC-DIO-1 is typically deployed as a fixed-bed polishing step after the acetic acid purification column. The adsorbent can be integrated into existing carbonylation plants with minimal modifications. ZeoCatalyst offers technical support for process design, adsorbent loading, and regeneration protocol development.
