Beta Zeolite for Alkylation
Beta zeolite is the most common zeolite catalyst for aromatic alkylation — the commercial route to ethylbenzene, cumene, and linear alkylbenzene. Its 12-MR 3D pore system provides unrestricted access for benzene, toluene, and C₂-C₁₃ olefins, while strong Brønsted acidity drives high conversion at commercial rates.
Why Beta Excels in Alkylation
Large-pore 3D access: The BEA framework’s 12-membered ring channels (~6.6 Å) admit aromatics and olefins of all commercial alkylation feedstocks without diffusion limitation. Bulky reaction intermediates and alkylated products move freely through the pore system.
Strong Brønsted acidity: Proton-exchanged Beta (H-Beta) generates the acid sites that activate the olefin to a carbocation and drive the electrophilic substitution. SiO₂/Al₂O₃ of 20-50 is the typical alkylation range, balancing activity with deactivation resistance.
Regenerability: Coke deposits are burned off thermally, restoring activity over many cycles — the practical advantage that displaced liquid acids.
Applications
| Process | Reaction | Typical Product |
|---|---|---|
| Ethylbenzene | Benzene + ethylene | Styrene intermediate |
| Cumene | Benzene + propylene | Phenol/acetone intermediate |
| Linear alkylbenzene (LAB) | Benzene + C₁₀-C₁₃ olefin | Detergent intermediate |
| Toluene alkylation | Toluene + methanol/olefins | Xylenes, ethyltoluenes |
Recommended Grades
| Objective | Recommended Grade | Key Parameters |
|---|---|---|
| General alkylation | H-Beta, SAR 20-50 | Strong acidity, high activity |
| Deactivation resistance | H-Beta, SAR 38+ | Lower acid density, longer cycle |
| Fixed-bed extrudates | Shaped Beta | Binder formulation, mechanical strength |
When requesting a sample for alkylation evaluation, specify your reactants (aromatic + olefin), target product, reactor type, and whether you need H-form powder or extrudates. See the Beta zeolite product page for the full grade range and the alkylation solution hub for zeolite selection.
