Beta Zeolite for Isomerization
Beta zeolite is the zeolite of choice for aromatic isomerization — specifically xylene isomerization to produce p-xylene and ethylbenzene conversion to benzene. Its 12-MR 3D pore system provides access for substituted aromatics, and its strong acidity drives the isomerization reactions at commercial rates.
Applications
Xylene isomerization: A thermodynamic C₈ aromatic stream (o-, m-, p-xylene + ethylbenzene) is isomerised over bifunctional Pt/Beta to approach equilibrium, maximising the p-xylene fraction — the feedstock for purified terephthalic acid and polyester production.
Ethylbenzene conversion: Ethylbenzene does not isomerise over acid sites alone; the Pt function dealkylates it to benzene and light olefins. Pt/Beta handles both functions in one bed.
