Best Zeolite for MTP
ZSM-5 is the catalyst of choice for MTP — in practice, the only commercial option. Its 10-MR MFI channels provide shape-selective constraints that favour propylene formation, and its tunable Si/Al ratio and crystal morphology allow the catalyst to be optimised specifically for propylene selectivity. No other zeolite framework has demonstrated commercial MTP performance.
Why ZSM-5 Dominates MTP
| Property | Why It Matters for MTP |
|---|---|
| 10-MR channels (5.1-5.6 Å) | Shape-selective constraints favour propylene over bulkier byproducts |
| Tunable Si/Al ratio | Optimises acid site density for propylene yield vs aromatics/C₄+ |
| Tunable crystal size | Smaller crystals reduce diffusion path, limiting secondary propylene reactions |
| High hydrothermal stability | Withstands repeated regeneration at 550-600 °C |
ZSM-5 Optimisation Parameters for MTP
Si/Al ratio is the primary optimisation parameter. Higher SAR (100-300) reduces acid site density, suppressing hydrogen transfer reactions that consume propylene to form paraffins and aromatics. MTP typically operates at higher SAR than general MTO ZSM-5 because the higher temperature favours propylene in the olefin interconversion network.
Crystal size affects diffusion and product selectivity. Smaller ZSM-5 crystals (100-500 nm) reduce diffusion path length, lowering secondary reactions of propylene to aromatics and coke. Nano-ZSM-5 is preferred for MTP when maximum propylene selectivity is the goal.
| Objective | Recommended ZSM-5 | Key Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum propylene yield | Si/Al 100-300 | Suppresses hydrogen transfer, favours olefin production |
| Longer catalyst life | Si/Al 200-500 | Higher SAR reduces coke formation rate |
| Balanced activity and selectivity | Si/Al 50-150 | Higher acid density for conversion, balanced with propylene selectivity |
ZC-MTP-1: Pre-Formulated MTP Catalyst
ZeoCatalyst supplies ZC-MTP-1, a proprietary ZSM-5-based catalyst formulated specifically for MTP: optimised Si/Al ratio (150-300), alumina binder for high mechanical strength in fixed-bed reactors, extended catalyst life through controlled acid site density, and customisable extrudate diameter matched to reactor pressure drop. See the ZC-MTP-1 product page for specifications.
When requesting a sample, specify your target Si/Al ratio, preferred crystal size, reactor configuration, and whether you need H-form powder, NH₄-form precursor, or pre-formulated ZC-MTP-1 extrudates.
