What is MTP?

MTP (Methanol-to-Propylene) is a methanol conversion process designed to maximise propylene yield. Unlike MTO — which balances ethylene and propylene production — MTP deliberately sacrifices ethylene yield to push the product distribution toward propylene, the higher-value building block for polypropylene, propylene oxide, and oxo-alcohols.

How MTP Works

MTP is essentially a ZSM-5-only process. Methanol dehydrates to dimethyl ether, then converts over the zeolite’s acid sites through the hydrocarbon pool mechanism at 450-550 °C. The catalyst and operating conditions are tuned together to shift the olefin interconversion equilibrium toward propylene:

MTP vs MTO

ParameterMTPMTO
CatalystZSM-5 onlySAPO-34 or ZSM-5
Temperature450-550 °C400-500 °C
Primary productPropyleneEthylene + propylene
Propylene selectivity40-50%30-40% (ZSM-5) / 35-45% (SAPO-34)
C₂+C₃ total~60-70%50-65% (ZSM-5) / 80-90% (SAPO-34)

The higher temperature of MTP shifts the olefin equilibrium toward propylene at the expense of some ethylene. See MTO for the balanced-olefin variant of the process.

Why ZSM-5 for MTP

ZSM-5’s 10-MR MFI channels provide shape-selective constraints that favour propylene formation, while its tunable Si/Al ratio allows optimisation of acid site density for maximum propylene yield with minimal aromatics and C₄+ byproducts. Higher SAR (100-300) suppresses hydrogen transfer reactions that consume propylene to form paraffins and aromatics.

ZeoCatalyst supplies ZC-MTP-1, a proprietary ZSM-5-based catalyst formulated specifically for MTP with optimised Si/Al ratio (150-300), alumina binder for fixed-bed mechanical strength, and controlled acid site density for extended catalyst life. See the ZC-MTP-1 product page for specifications. When requesting a sample, specify your target propylene selectivity and reactor configuration.
