ZSM-5 for MTP
ZSM-5 is the commercial catalyst for methanol-to-propylene conversion. MTP operates ZSM-5 at higher temperature (450-550 °C) than general MTO service, with the Si/Al ratio and crystal morphology optimised to shift the product slate toward propylene. Propylene selectivities of 40-50% are achievable with the right grade.
How ZSM-5 Works in MTP
Methanol dehydrates to dimethyl ether, then converts over ZSM-5’s Brønsted acid sites through the hydrocarbon pool mechanism. The 10-MR MFI channels (5.1-5.6 Å) shape-selectively favour propylene formation, while the acid site density — controlled by Si/Al ratio — determines the balance between propylene production and secondary reactions (hydrogen transfer to paraffins, aromatisation, coke formation).
Recommended ZSM-5 Grades for MTP
| Objective | Recommended Grade | Key Parameters |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum propylene yield | Si/Al 100-300 | Suppresses hydrogen transfer, favours olefin production |
| Longer catalyst life | Si/Al 200-500 | Higher SAR reduces coke formation rate |
| Balanced activity and selectivity | Si/Al 50-150 | Higher acid density for conversion, balanced with propylene selectivity |
| Maximum propylene selectivity | Nano-ZSM-5 (100-500 nm) | Shorter diffusion path, fewer secondary reactions |
Operating Conditions
MTP typically runs at 450-550 °C, near atmospheric pressure, with methanol WHSV of 1-4 h⁻¹. The higher temperature compared to MTO shifts the olefin equilibrium toward propylene at the expense of some ethylene. ZSM-5’s slower coke accumulation (versus SAPO-34) supports longer single-cycle operation in fixed-bed and swing-reactor designs.
For a pre-formulated option, ZeoCatalyst supplies ZC-MTP-1 — a proprietary ZSM-5-based MTP catalyst with optimised Si/Al (150-300), alumina binder for fixed-bed mechanical strength, and extended catalyst life. See the ZC-MTP-1 product page and MTP solution hub for more. When requesting a sample, specify your target Si/Al ratio, crystal size, and reactor configuration.
