What is Beta Zeolite?

Beta zeolite catalyst is a synthetic large-pore zeolite with the BEA framework topology — a three-dimensional 12-membered ring channel system with pore openings of approximately 6.6 Å. Unlike medium-pore zeolites such as ZSM-5 (5.1-5.6 Å), Beta’s wider pores admit bulkier molecules including multi-ring aromatics, branched hydrocarbons, and substituted benzenes. This makes Beta a key catalyst product to evaluate when the reactant is too large for a 10-MR pore system.

Beta’s 3D pore network is a practical advantage over one-dimensional or cage-based zeolites. Molecules can diffuse in three crystallographic directions, reducing the diffusion limitations that slow reactions in 1D-channel or cage-based frameworks. This is particularly valuable in liquid-phase reactions where mass transport often controls overall rate.

Beta zeolite is supplied with SiO₂/Al₂O₃ ratios from 20 to 200+, balancing strong Brønsted acidity (at lower SAR) with improved stability and coke resistance (at higher SAR). H-form, NH₄-form, and Na-form precursors are available.

How Beta Zeolite Is Used

Beta zeolite’s combination of large-pore access and strong acidity makes it the preferred zeolite for several important industrial reactions:

Hydrocracking of heavy feedstocks where the zeolite must admit bulky polycyclic aromatics and heavy paraffins. Beta’s 12-MR pores provide better access to these large molecules than medium-pore zeolites, while its 3D channel system reduces diffusion constraints.

Alkylation of aromatics — ethylbenzene, cumene, linear alkylbenzene — where Beta serves as a solid-acid replacement for liquid HF and AlCl₃ catalysts. Its large pores accommodate both the aromatic and the olefin reactant without diffusion limitation.

Isomerization of xylenes and other aromatics where large-pore access and strong acidity are needed for high conversion.

SCR (selective catalytic reduction) as a lower-cost zeolite support for Cu- or Fe-exchanged NOx reduction catalysts in stationary applications.
