Cu-Beta Zeolite Catalyst
Cu-Beta is the copper-exchanged form of the Beta zeolite (BEA framework), a cost-effective catalyst for stationary SCR of NOx below 500 °C and for VOC oxidation. Its 12-MR 3D pore system combines good accessibility with copper redox activity, delivering adequate NOx conversion at moderate temperatures at a lower material cost than SSZ-13-based catalysts.
What is Cu-Beta?
Cu-Beta is produced by copper exchange of H-Beta or NH₄-Beta. Copper occupies exchange sites in the BEA framework, providing the redox sites for NOx reduction and oxidation chemistry. Its large-pore 3D structure avoids the diffusion limitations that smaller-pore zeolites impose on bulky molecules, which also makes Cu-Beta useful for VOC oxidation service.
Applications
| Application | Why Cu-Beta |
|---|---|
| Stationary SCR below 500 °C | Adequate NOx conversion at moderate temperatures, lower cost |
| VOC catalytic oxidation | Large-pore access for VOC molecules + copper redox sites |
| Cost-sensitive NOx abatement | Lower material cost than SSZ-13-based catalysts |
| Combined adsorption + oxidation | Zeolite support + copper functionality in one material |
Cu-Beta vs Cu-SSZ-13 for SCR
| Property | Cu-Beta | Cu-SSZ-13 |
|---|---|---|
| Framework | BEA (12-MR 3D) | CHA (8-MR cages) |
| Copper stabilisation | Moderate | Excellent (cage confinement) |
| Hydrothermal stability | Good | Excellent to 800 °C+ |
| Low-temperature activity | Good | > 90% at 200 °C |
| Relative cost | Lower | Higher |
| Typical duty | Stationary, moderate temperature | Mobile diesel SCR |
Cu-Beta cannot survive the 800 °C excursions of diesel particulate filter regeneration — the reason mobile SCR uses Cu-SSZ-13. For stationary applications with stable exhaust temperature below 500 °C, Cu-Beta provides adequate performance at lower cost.
Available Grades
| Grade | SiO₂/Al₂O₃ | Cu Loading | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cu-Beta-25 | 25 | 2-4 wt% | Stationary SCR, 200-450 °C |
| Cu-Beta-38 | 38 | 1.5-3 wt% | Stationary SCR + VOC oxidation |
Precursor H-Beta and NH₄-Beta grades are available for customers performing their own copper exchange — see the Beta zeolite product hub.
