HY Zeolite Properties
HY zeolite catalyst is the proton-exchanged H-form of Y zeolite, providing the strongest Bronsted acidity in the FAU family. It retains the supercage architecture of Y while replacing Na plus with H plus for maximum acid activity in supplier-grade FCC matrix and acid catalysis applications.
Strong Bronsted Acidity
Proton exchange replaces Na plus with H plus, creating bridging hydroxyl groups (Si-OH-Al) that are strong Bronsted acid sites. HY delivers higher initial cracking activity than USY because no dealumination has been performed. Na2O content below 0.1 wt percent ensures acid sites are not poisoned by residual sodium.
Stability Trade-off
HY sacrifices hydrothermal stability for maximum acidity. Without dealumination, the framework is susceptible to steam degradation above 500 C. For FCC regenerator conditions (700 to 800 C in steam), USY is preferred. HY remains valuable in FCC active matrix, fine chemical acid catalysis, and moderate-temperature hydrocracking.
