SAPO-11 Properties
SAPO-11 is a silicoaluminophosphate molecular sieve with the AEL framework topology, characterized by elliptical 10-membered ring channels (~4.0 × 6.5 A) running in one dimension.
Key Physical Properties
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Framework type | AEL |
| Channel system | 1D, 10-MR elliptical (4.0 × 6.5 A) |
| BET surface area | ≥ 350 m2/g |
| Pore volume | ~ 0.15-0.20 cm3/g |
| XRD crystallinity | ≥ 90% vs AEL reference |
Acidity Profile
SAPO-11 has inherently mild acidity compared to aluminosilicate zeolites. The acid sites arise from silicon substitution into the AlPO framework, creating Brønsted acid sites that are weaker and less dense than those in zeolites like ZSM-5 or Beta. This mild acidity is a key advantage for hydroisomerization: it provides sufficient activity for alkane isomerization while minimizing unwanted cracking.
Key Characteristics
- Mild acidity: Suppresses cracking during alkane isomerization, preserving liquid yield
- Constrained pore geometry: 10-MR elliptical channels provide shape selectivity for linear and slightly branched molecules
- Good hydrothermal stability: For silicoaluminophosphate framework, stable under hydroprocessing conditions
- Bifunctional capability: When loaded with noble metal (Pt, typically), acts as bifunctional catalyst for hydroisomerization
Comparison with Other Isomerization Catalysts
| Catalyst | Acidity | Pore System | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAPO-11 | Mild | 10-MR 1D (4.0 × 6.5 A) | n-Alkane hydroisomerization, dewaxing |
| ZSM-5 | Minimal (adsorption) | 10-MR 3D (5.1-5.6 A) | Aromatic isomer separation (adsorption) |
| Beta | Strong | 12-MR 3D (6.6 × 6.7 A) | Aromatic isomerization (catalytic) |
