TS-1 Zeolite (Titanium Silicalite)

TS-1 (titanium silicalite-1) is the titanium-substituted form of the MFI framework — the benchmark oxidation zeolite. Framework titanium sites activate hydrogen peroxide for selective liquid-phase oxidations: propylene epoxidation, cyclohexanone ammoximation, and phenol hydroxylation. TS-1 made H₂O₂-based selective oxidation commercially viable and remains the reference catalyst for clean oxidation chemistry.

What is TS-1?

TS-1 has the MFI framework of ZSM-5 with titanium atoms isomorphously substituted for silicon at framework positions. The framework Ti(IV) sites, in tetrahedral coordination, activate H₂O₂ to form the peroxo species that perform selective oxygen transfer. Because the titanium is isolated in the framework rather than present as bulk TiO₂, TS-1 achieves oxidation selectivities that no TiO₂-based catalyst approaches.
