USY Zeolite for Hydrocracking
USY zeolite is used in hydrocracking where long-term stability is more important than maximum acid strength. Its dealuminated FAU framework combines large-pore access, controlled acidity, and improved hydrothermal durability.
Why USY Fits Severe Hydrocracking
Hydrocracking units operate under high hydrogen pressure and elevated temperature. The zeolite must retain crystallinity and acidity over long campaigns. USY is created by dealuminating Y zeolite, which raises framework stability and creates secondary mesoporosity that helps heavy molecules reach internal acid sites.
USY is especially useful where the catalyst must balance conversion with middle-distillate selectivity. Its acidity is typically more controlled than HY, reducing the risk of excessive secondary cracking to light gases.
Critical Specifications
| Specification | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| SiO2/Al2O3 ratio | Controls acidity and stability |
| Unit cell size | Indicates dealumination level and acid-site density |
| Mesopore volume | Supports heavy-feed diffusion |
| Na2O content | Low sodium preserves acid activity |
| XRD crystallinity | Confirms FAU framework quality |
Hydrocracking-grade USY is often selected in the SiO2/Al2O3 30-80+ range, depending on target conversion, catalyst life, and product slate.
USY vs Beta
USY is generally preferred for stability-focused hydrocracking and severe service. Beta zeolite is often screened when bulky-feed access and higher acid activity are the main objectives. Many catalyst developers evaluate both frameworks before final formulation.
