Beta Zeolite for Hydrocracking

Beta zeolite is selected for hydrocracking when the feed contains bulky molecules that benefit from the open, three-dimensional BEA pore system. Its 12-membered-ring channels give better access to large hydrocarbons than medium-pore zeolites and provide strong acidity for cracking and isomerization.

Why Beta Works in Hydrocracking

Hydrocracking catalysts are bifunctional: metal sites provide hydrogenation and dehydrogenation, while zeolite acid sites perform cracking and isomerization. Beta contributes the acid function. Its large-pore structure is useful for vacuum gas oil, heavy naphtha, and feeds containing branched or cyclic molecules.

Beta is often evaluated when the goal is higher activity or improved conversion of bulky feed molecules. Compared with USY, Beta can provide stronger acidity and fast access through its 3D channel system. The trade-off is that USY is usually preferred where maximum long-campaign hydrothermal stability is the main requirement.

Grade Selection

ParameterTypical Direction
SiO2/Al2O3 ratio25-100 for activity-stability balance
Sodium contentLow Na2O to preserve acidity
Crystal sizeSmaller crystals can improve diffusion
FormPowder for catalyst formulation or shaped form for testing

For middle-distillate selectivity, higher Si/Al Beta grades can reduce overcracking. For naphtha-oriented conversion, lower Si/Al grades may provide higher acid activity.

Evaluation Notes

Beta zeolite should be tested with the intended metal function and binder system because hydrocracking performance depends on metal-acid balance. Excess acidity can increase light gas formation; insufficient acidity limits conversion.
