What is MTP Catalyst for Methanol-to-Propylene
ZC-MTP-1 is a ZSM-5-based methanol-to-propylene catalyst formulated with a carefully controlled Si/Al ratio and alumina binder to maximise propylene selectivity while maintaining commercial conversion rates.
Why ZSM-5 for MTP
Methanol-to-propylene is a variant of MTO chemistry where the objective is shifted toward maximising propylene rather than ethylene. ZSM-5 is the catalyst of choice for MTP because:
- 10-MR MFI channels provide shape-selective constraints that favour propylene formation
- Tunable Si/Al ratio allows optimisation of acid site density for the higher temperature MTP window (450-550 C)
- Hydrothermal stability under steam-rich regeneration conditions exceeds that of SAPO-type catalysts
At Si/Al ratios of 150-300, ZC-MTP-1 provides sufficient acid sites for methanol dehydration and olefin interconversion while minimising hydrogen transfer — the secondary reaction that consumes propylene to form paraffins and aromatics.
Catalyst Formulation
The ZSM-5 zeolite is combined with an alumina binder that provides mechanical integrity for fixed-bed operation. The extrudate form (typically 1.5-3.0 mm diameter) allows efficient packing with controlled pressure drop. Custom formulations including alternative binders or shaped bodies are available.
